What’s in a Name?

The two thousand year old Irish sport of Hurling

From: A concerned, former football fan

Topic: Name change for the Washington Redskins football team.

Dear Mr. Page;

 I agree with our Native American population and am highly jilted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors and a great people, but nay, nay! We must be careful not to offend and in the spirit of political correctness and radicalized courtesy, we must move forward.

 Additionally let’s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference to the name ‘Redskins’ makes to skin color, then we should get rid of the Cleveland ‘Browns’ as well.

The Carolina Panthers were obviously named to keep the memory of the militant Blacks, The Black Panthers, from the 60’s alive. Should be gone! It’s offensive to us white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country over 600,000 young men’s lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. It is totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres all offensive to our atheist brothers and sisters.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as well as the Pittsburgh Pirates! REALLY, pirates?!

In the immortal words of our esteemed and eternally honest Nancy Pelosi, what about the children? Let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote reckless fighting or irresponsible spending habits. Wrong message to the kids. What about the growing epidemic of obesity forwarded by The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants both of which obviously endorse the growing childhood epidemic of obesity? Again, wrong message. The Cincinnati Reds promote downers and barbiturates. And the Milwaukee Brewers? Promoting alcohol?! Abysmal, this goes without saying! Again wrong message to our children.

Because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they rightly should become involved with all issues concerning others, I submit we need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify these blatant travesties of social injustice. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves to do.

With all of this in mind and as die-hard Oregon State fans, my wife and I suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women’s athletic teams to something other than the Beavers, especially when they play Southern California! I mean do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers? I should think not! (Not without mutual consent anyway.)

I appreciate your articles Mr. Page and I generally agree with them. So as for the Redskins name change I would suggest they change the name to the “Foreskins” to better represent their community in order to pay homage to those dick heads in Washington D.C.

Yours truly, John R. Buyaclue
